Georgia Forestry Leaders Help Shape New Regional Innovation Corridor

Georgia forestry leaders and researchers are helping shape a new regional effort to develop markets for Southern wood and strengthen the forest-products economy.

The Forest Products Innovation Corridor brings together industry, universities, government and economic development partners across Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina. The initiative launched in September with a focus on turning research and emerging technologies into commercial opportunities for the region’s forestry industry.

Georgia’s Role in Building New Markets

The University of Georgia’s Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources is among the academic partners contributing to the regional conversation. Dean Todd Petty moderated a panel at the initiative’s kickoff, which included discussions among state forestry leaders and forestry association presidents from all three states.

Georgia’s participation builds on the state’s research expertise, forest resources and established forest-products industry. Collaboration among universities, industry and forestry organizations can help identify opportunities to expand markets, attract investment and bring new forest-based products to market.

From Research to Commercial Opportunity

The corridor is exploring opportunities in mass timber, advanced wood products, biomaterials, renewable chemicals, biofuels and other emerging markets. The goal is to connect promising ideas with the industry partners, investment and expertise needed to move them toward commercial use.

Clemson University’s Wood Utilization + Design Institute serves as the initiative’s institutional home, with the broader effort built around regional collaboration.

For Georgia, participation offers another avenue to advance innovation, strengthen forest-products markets and support the rural communities that depend on working forests.
