The Ichauway E-Vent

October 18, 2021 @ 9:00 am - October 22, 2021 @ 3:00 pm

Many of you have attended our biennial Open House in the past. Covid forced us to cancel this event in 2021, so we’re bringing to you a virtual substitute! Join us October 18-22 for a week of new exclusive content, fascinating never-before-seen video, Facebook Live sessions, and more! Understand the science and management behind one of the nation’s most diverse ecosystems.

MONDAY

We’ll kick things off with our first video, a historical overview and interview with Dr. Kier Klepzig, Director of the Jones Center. This will be followed by an ArcGIS StoryMap that recaps the history and development of the Jones Center as well as some of the primary ecosystems found on the Ichauway property. The afternoon will include a slide show featuring photos of Ichauway from Richard T. Bryant, an award-winning professional photographer. The last feature will be the first of our daily coloring pages for the kids!

TUESDAY

Tuesday is all about longleaf pine. We’ll start with a video overview of longleaf pine ecology, including our fire management program here at Ichauway, our red-cockaded woodpecker restoration project, and more. A second video will feature our approaches to longleaf restoration from different starting conditions. A Facebook Live session will review Hurricane Michael, which hit Ichauway three years ago this month. We’ll hear about research and management activities since then and review “lessons learned.” Our coloring page for the young ones will feature the longleaf pine ecosystem.

WEDNESDAY

Our newest research program at the Center is led by Dr. Kier Klepzig, who is also the Director of the Center. Relatively little is known about insects in the longleaf pine ecosystem; this research is ripe for new discoveries and insights about insects and the important roles they play in these ecosystems.

THURSDAY

On Thursday, we turn our attention to our work with aquatic ecology and water resources with two videos. Join our Aquatic Biology Lab down at Ichawaynochaway Creek to learn more about their work. Our Ecohydrology Lab will focus on the important, but often overlooked connections between forests and water. Interact with the aquatics lab in a Facebook Live session highlighting a new project they are launching working with wetlands in agricultural settings.

FRIDAY

Friday, October 22 is wildlife day! We’ll start first thing on Instagram with our resident expert answering your questions about red-cockaded woodpeckers. Our first video of the day provides an overview of our herpetology program, including the gopher tortoise. This will be followed up with a video reviewing our 15+ year predator ecology long-term research project. We’ll wrap up the week on Facebook Live with a rerelease of the gopher tortoise video we produced with Untamed Science, including bonus footage and a Q&A with our herpetologist and the video producer. Finally, kids won’t want to miss the wildlife coloring page.
